Episode 13

Alexander McQueen

Published on: 5th July, 2021

Kim and Luca celebrate the life and work of trailblazing designer Alexander McQueen.

Fashion should be a form of escapism and not a form of imprisonment

From his formative days as an apprentice for Cornelius O'Callaghan on Savile Row, his pivotal meeting with Isabella Blow, spending unemployment benefits on fabrics to becoming Creative Director of Givenchy, McQueen's life was one of extremes, excesses, passion and emotion.

We discuss some of his groundbreaking shows including the robots painting Shalom Harlowe in #13, his depictions of Scottish history in the Highland Rape and Widows of Culloden, his literary and historical influences, his Clothes as Armour approach to empowering women, his difficult relationship with the media and much more.

About the Podcast

How Not
A Space for Good Troublemakers
How Not is the brainchild of two gobby Scottish creatives, Kim Macari and Luca Manning, who like to talk about the BIG stuff. We thought you might like to listen...So here we are. Our mission is to always be Good Troublemakers, to think big and to ask - How Not?!

Each episode, we pick something BIG to talk about. Sometimes that's an issue or idea that's been keeping us awake at night (like the right to Protest, The Punk Movement or Universal Basic Income...) and sometimes it's a person who think is bold and brilliant - someone worthy of the title Good Troublemaker (like Keith Haring, Marsha P. Johnson or Dererk Jarman...)
